Name: Yusei Fudo
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Canon Point: Post Dark Signers arc
Age: 18
History: Yusei @ YGO Wiki - uses dub names, but the information is nearly identical
Personality: When people first meet Yusei Fudo, they may find him a bit cold. Yusei is initially wary around strangers. He speaks to them only in short sentences when necessary, refers to acquaintances by their last names, and often regards them with a certain amount of suspicion. Despite this behavior, however, he warms up quickly to people as soon as he is sure that they don't mean him any harm.
After this initial period of stoicism, Yusei becomes a much softer person. He refers to his friends casually and is gifted with a large amount of patience that lets him put up with people that have more difficult personalities. Bonds with other people are easily the most important thing to Yusei and he will try to get anyone, even his enemies, to see their value. The root of such a strong belief is due to his childhood, where many people offered him friendship and even risked their lives for him when he believed they had justified reason to hate and reject him. From this also spawns his belief that everyone in the world has a place, that no one is worthless or unwanted. To suggest that a person or an object a person values is useless or "garbage" is the ultimate offense to him. Yusei also hates it when a person tries to claim superiority based on social status and he strongly dislikes abuses of power, particularly in authority figures. These ideals are so important to him that he will put himself into danger without hesitation in order to uphold them.
All people, he believes, have the right to be happy so long as it doesn't cause pain or suffering to others and he has very low opinions of people who seem to care only for themselves or take joy from hurting others. If Yusei doesn't approve of someone, he will make it quite clear. He does also believe in second chances, though, and if a person is willing to see the error of their ways and change, he will extend a friendly hand to them. It's difficult for him to say no to people he cares about, which means he may allow them to make harmful decisions even if he knows they are not the right thing to do, but he will draw a line if it leads to others getting hurt. In the case of a friend who turns into an enemy, Yusei finds confronting them extremely difficult and will often choose to believe that a bond still exists and that friendships can be rekindled.
Yusei places a lot of value on physical objects. They are valuable to him not because of any monetary worth, but because of sentimental reasons. To him, they are physical representations of a person's memories and their dreams and he will go to great lengths to retrieve high value items that become lost or stolen. Furthermore, he often speaks of these items as if they are sentient, and he will often advise others to trust their own objects, assuring them that these inanimate objects will respond to their feelings and pull through. If a goal is considered important enough to him, he is willing to break the law in order to achieve it. He has trespassed, stolen, hacked computer systems, and gotten into physical fights for the sake of his objectives, although that's the extent his criminal activity will go.
The son of a scientist, Yusei is an extremely intelligent young man. He is an incredibly talented mechanic and computer programmer, able to make high performance machines out of scrap metal and junk and write programs for them. If he becomes absorbed into a project, he will spend long hours or stay up all night working on them. He is also an excellent driver, well versed in physics, and is a skilled card duelist. Pair him with a like-minded individual and he becomes a chatterbox who is all too happy to talk about his favorite subjects for hours on end. He carefully thinks and plans his actions, which sometimes leads to overthinking and the times where he does act rashly often backfire on him. Although he is intelligent, Yusei is also a rather predictable person. Many people remark that he "never changes." While this is not entirely accurate, it is true that he is an honest, straightforward person and has a certain set of core traits and values that remain constant, thus making it easy for people to guess what his reactions to any given situation will be, which in turn, can make it easy for them to trick or manipulate him.
If there is one thing that Yusei does not do well, it's deal with negative emotions. When he is irritated, he becomes quite moody and has a tendency to shun social interaction. All sense of politeness or manners he possesses simply vanish until he calms down. Anyone who does try to interact with him will find themselves an undeserving target of misplaced aggression or find themselves met with curt words and a dismissal, leading to someone else having to apologize for his abysmal behavior until he calms down and apologizes himself. When stricken by fear, Yusei becomes mentally paralyzed by it. Fear is another emotion he does not handle well at all. It stays in the back of his mind and seeps into his actions and interactions with people.
Despite his beliefs about equality and happiness for all, Yusei actually has incredibly low self esteem and will always put the needs and desires of his loved ones above his own. Yusei rarely has personal aspirations of his own and instead often chooses to share in the dreams of others, making him lost when he is on his own and has no one else to support. Because of this, he is willing to go very far to protect his friends or do things for them, sometimes when they don't want him to. At the root of Yusei's low self esteem and lack of personal ambition is a powerful guilt complex about past events he had no control over or responsibility for, and he feels like it is his responsibility to atone for the disaster and continuously prove to the people important to him that he is worthy of their kindness and trust. When overwhelmed by his emotions, Yusei becomes reclusive and tries to avoid his problems. Whenever he falls into this state, he needs someone to pull him out of them. His fears and guilt are notable weak spots that can be exploited and an easy way to shake his confidence, weaken him, or just plain mess with his head.
